A Conversation with Associate Professor Xing Jian

Time:2021-06-16

Dr. Xing Jian finished his postdoctoral research in the United States in 2015. And then he chose to go back and joined DGO.

1) What attracted you most to apply for the position at Xiamen University?

The beautiful city and favorable academic environments of the College of Ocean and Earth sciences at Xiamen University.

2) What were some of the professional challenges you faced starting your position in the DGO, how did you overcome these challenges?

I am a geologist in the area of sedimentology and sedimentary basin analysis, most of my previous work is on the land and focuses on “hard rocks”. I think the big professional challenge for me was having a better understanding of other disciplines in ocean sciences and letting my research be closed to the ocean sciences (especially marine biogeochemistry). To overcome these challenges, I often discussed with faculty members from other departments and went to seminars from MEL.

3) Can you describe your experience working in a multicultural environment within DGO?

It is funny and I can learn a lot about the different life, culture, as well as the science and technology from the foreign faculty members.
