2016 National Excellent College Student Marine Science Summer Camp
With the great efforts of Xiamen University Graduate School and COE Office & Departments, on 20th July, 2016 National Excellent College Student Marine Science Summer Camp achieved its full success: selected from 30 Chinese universities, 66 outstanding college students accomplished their tasks of this summer camp; among them, 42 students received the honorary title of "Excellent Camper". The summer camp aims to promote communications between college students, introduce the disciplinary development of marine science in XMU and stimulate students’ interest for marine science.
The Establishment of the New Department of Geological Oceanography
After about 4 years of preparation, on 21 June 2016, the Department of Geological Oceanography (DGO) of College of Ocean and Earth Sciences (COE) was established.A short but grand establishment ceremony was held at the hall of Xiping Building in the Xiang'an Campus of Xiamen University (XMU).
XMU launched its new research vessel, named ‘Tan Kah Kee’
On May 8th, 2016, XMU launched its own scientific research vessel of the 3000 deadweight ton. The new vessel was named as ‘Tan Kah Kee’, in memory of our great founder of XMU, Mr. Tan Kah Kee. It is carrying dreams of all ‘XMUers’, and will certainly carry forward Tan Kah Kee Spirit.The launching ceremony was held in Guangzhou Shipyard International Company Limited (GSI). Lots of distinguished guests attended the ceremony, especially from the Tan Kah Kee family. They are: Mrs. Wu Meiying, Mr. Tan Kah Kee’s daughter-in-law; Mr. Chen Liren, Mr. Tan Kah Kee’s eldest grandson.
The 4th XMU Ocean Sciences Open Day
The 4rd Annual Ocean Sciences Day was held on November 15th on Xiang’an Campus. This 4th event was also our first! Our first one in our new home at Xiamen University's Xiang'an campus that is.Over 4000 visitors came through the three buildings (Zhou Long Quan Bldg, Xiping Bldg and Jinquan Bldg) which house ocean sciences here to learn about the work our researchers do and how they too can become stewards of the ocean. Various subjects covered a lot of research going on here such as the carbon cycle, ocean observations, phytoplankton, zooplankton, marine debris, marine biodiversity, wetland conservation, ocean acidification, marine mammals, kelp, food security, seabird watching, intertidal ecosystem, work in the Arctic, etc.
